Interesting Report on the Impact of Social Media in Recruitment

I have just been reading this interesting report on the impact of social media on recruitment. It makes for a real interesting read, well for me anyway!

There is no doubt social media has had an impact on recruitment but I seriously question its effectiveness. Firstly the vast majority of people who are looking to hire, are on LinkedIn. Everyone has the same access to candidates and jobs. Put simply it is generating noise and completely discounts any personal relationships. Clients are missing good candidates because they are being swamped with applications. Candidates are missing out on opportunities as how seriously do they take the constant direct approaches on LinkedIn. There is no doubt that LinkedIn serves a purpose, mainly to reference check potential employees and jobs. However what is far more effective is strong personal contacts, networks, influence and market knowledge, which is far more effective than social media.
