Liam Mooney

Liam founded Blue Pencil in 2002. He is a law graduate and graduated from Cambridge University in 1996 and is a UK qualified solicitor. Liam was a Cambridge Rugby Blue in 1994 & 1995 and played professional rugby for Ireland A, Barbarians and London Irish whilst qualifying as a solicitor. He then worked as a solicitor in the City of London before forming Blue Pencil. Liam primarily focuses on the international private practice market as well as developing the overall corporate strategy of Blue Pencil. He is well known by law firms for his practical, honest and strategic advice. He has also been involved in team moves and merging of practices. His market knowledge is highly regarded by both clients and candidates and his contacts are second to none. In 2014 Liam won the Arabian Business, Business Mentor of the Year in 2014 in particular for his contribution and support to the SME Sector. In August 2015, Liam was named as a finalist in the Gulf Capital SME Awards, as the “Business Leader of the Year”.

Chris joined Blue Pencil in August 2017 in the capacity of Director/COO having been an experienced HR Director previously in the legal sector and elsewhere. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD). Aside from over 27 years’ experience in the HR/People Management arena, Chris was recognised in February 2017 as one of the 100 most influential Global HR Professionals at the World HRD Congress in Mumbai. Areas of his expertise include recruitment as well as the delivery of learning and development solutions for lawyers and professionals working in the legal arena. Chris has also successfully coached many senior lawyers into Partnership roles and is especially well equipped to work with senior candidates looking for their next promotional move to Partnership.

Chris began his career in legal recruitment with Blue Pencil in 2005 before moving to another leading legal recruitment firm based in London. Chris subsequently returned to Blue Pencil in 2017 and now has over 13 years’ experience in the permanent legal recruitment market where he has worked with candidates at the most senior levels in law firms. Prior to working in the recruitment sector, Chris had graduated with a degree in law and worked in private practice for a leading regional legal 500 firm. Chris specialises in placing Solicitors and Partners into private practice and is also responsible for ensuring that all of the Legal Recruitment Consultants at Blue Pencil are working in line with the highest professional standards. In his career to date, Chris has focussed on working with UK/US and International law firms in the London, Off Shore, Middle East and Asia Pacific markets. He has developed a well-established client base and is often called upon to assist law firms with some of their more challenging recruitment briefs.

Aaron Fruen

Prior to joining Blue Pencil in 2017, Aaron has worked with a leading legal recruitment firm in Central London.  Aaron has significant experience in the permanent legal recruitment market especially in London where much of his experience has been gained. Aside from his current career in legal recruitment, Aaron had previously spent 4 years working in the Litigation practice of a leading regional law firm in Southampton after obtaining his degree in law. Aaron specialises in placing qualified lawyers into private practice and also has an established network of candidates he works with to assist them with their career progression. The focus of Aaron’s work is primarily related to working with UK firms as well as International/US practices in the London market.

Ethan Field

Ethan joined Blue Pencil in September 2018 having completed his Law degree from the University of Manchester. Ethan is no stranger to the legal sector having interned previously with a number of law firms including James Warry & Co in Coleford, Gloucestershire, as well as Okells and Francis in Ross on Wye. Keen to enhance his commercial acumen as well as his legal knowledge, Ethan also spent time during his University breaks working on the supplies/invoicing side of a large building materials firm so that he could get a first-hand understanding of a customer supply chain.

Outside of work, Ethan is a keen squash and football player. Ethan is currently based in the firm’s Bristol (Portishead) office.

Sara Baker

Sara joined Blue Pencil in August 2018. Previously she has worked as a Legal Assistant. Prior to coming into recruitment Sara became a fully qualified Primary School Teacher, and taught in one of the most deprived areas in the country. Sara has also lived in Shanghai, working as an English second language teacher. In 2013 she graduated with a degree in law from the University of Kent.

Outside of work Sara enjoys travelling and exploring new places. She also has a passion for learning languages, in particular Spanish and Mandarin. She will be building on her basic conversational Mandarin, by enrolling on a business Mandarin language course for professionals.

Sonam Ahmed

Sonam joined Blue Pencil at the start of 2018 and is a key member of the legal recruitment consulting team. She is responsible  for supporting clients both in the UK and the Middle East. She is currently in an advanced stage with her own legal studies which she is pursuing in addition to her work with Blue Pencil. Sonam is also a member of the Young Asian Lawyers Association and regularly attends legal networking events. Her passion for the legal profession generally is mirrored by her keenness to help candidates find placements which align with their interests and help further their careers.

Paul Turner

PAUL TURNER Paul has over 30 years of commercial legal experience as a partner in City of London legal firms, including 11 years as a partner with Clyde & Co and 15 years running his own firm. He has also been Head of Arbitration for several years at the Middle East's largest law firm based in the UAE. His experience has been largely in the field of international disputes before the LCIA, ICC, LMAA, LME, RSA, GAFTA, FOSFA, SAL, DIFC-LCIA, DIAC, Stockholm Chamber of Commerce as well as court cases in the English High Court, Court of Appeal and the House of Lords (now the Supreme Court). He has also handled ad hoc arbitrations in Geneva, Moscow, Doha, London and Dubai. His clients over the years have included the Governments of various Middle Eastern countries and Central Asia plus some of the world's largest commodity companies. Paul has also acted as an arbitrator in proceedings under the rules of the ICC, LCIA, LMAA, DIFC-LCIA, DIAC and in a number of ad hoc matters.
